Maintaining Power Tools

Power tools are one of the perks of the modern age that have made construction projects of all types easier to finish. While they often excel at making complicated tasks simpler, they are complex machines in themselves. While using them is often easy, they also need to be maintained regularly. Even with regular use, you can prolong the life of your power tools by following proper maintenance procedures.

Drills
For many people, the electric drill sees a lot of use. In addition to its common purpose of putting holes in things, various add-ons allow it to grind, sand and polish and well. The most important thing you can do to keep the drill functioning properly is to make sure it does not overheat. This often means taking breaks to let it cool off during sessions of heavy use. This also means cleaning the vents and motor by blasting high-pressure air through them or using a small scrubbing tool.

Jig Saws
Jig saws, or saber saws, are able to cut through a multitude of different material and make intricate cuts in wood. Most of the issues that arise in these saws stem from misuse. Making sure that you use it the right way will help ensure that you get your money’s worth out of it.

Make sure that motor is at full power before attempting to engage the blade. You will also need to take into consideration the speed of the blade. Softer materials, such as wood, cut cleaner at faster speeds, but you will want to use lower speeds for more dense materials. Also make sure that the blade is sharpened regularly. A dull blade puts more stress on the machine and creates a lot of friction on the material in use. If you have the tools, you can sharpen the blade yourself, or have it done by a professional. After a reasonable time period, you will eventually have to just replace it. After use, make sure the device is powered down and unplugged, and then clean off the main components with a brush and clear the vents with compressed air.
Sanders

Given the nature of a power sander’s purpose, they quickly build up a layer of dust. Depending on the type of sander you own, dust can begin to accumulate inside the device and create problems for the internal mechanisms. To keep the device from failing, it is important to make sure to prevent obstructions in these mechanisms by clearing the openings with air or small brushes. On models with dust bags, make sure that it is always attached and emptied before it’s completely full. Also make sure that the sandpaper is effectively rough and attached to the device correctly.
